No Charges for Gizmodo's Jason Chen in iPhone4 Case -- Here's What You Should Have Learned


Gizmodo's Jason Chen is in the clear now that the San Mateo County District Attorney's office has decided not to file charges against him for buying a stolen iPhone4 last year (good summary of earlier events here).

Brian Hogan and Sage Wallower, who allegedly found the phone and sold it to Gizmodo, will be charged with misappropriation of lost property and possession of stolen property.

Some practical lessons here:

1. If you find something that is not yours, give it back.
2. If you find something you know is not yours and you sell it, you are a criminal.

Chill Launches Video Version of Turntable.fm (Yes, Just as Addictive)


Chill, which lets friends watch and share videos together, quietly launched on Wednesday.

Similar to Turntable.fm, “chillers” gather in user-created lounges to play videos from YouTube, Vimeo or Hulu (see screen shot below -- our favorite lounge right now is I want my MTV).

Chill is a "side project" from Brian Norgard and Dan Gould, the founders of L.A.-based conversation site Namesake as well as Adly.

Exclusive: Adly Making Its Own Destination Site


Adly, which matches brands and celebrities for promoted tweets, is considering starting its own destination site under a separate brand name so it will not have to depend on other social networks for distribution, CEO Arnie Gullov-Singh said Tuesday on "This Week in Startups."

Arnie said Adly investor and board member Mark Suster has pushed for "more of a consumer destination, one in which you own your own distribution."

British Police Vilified Social Media, Now Use It to Catch Rioters


Like the Metropolitan Police in London, the Greater Manchester Police force is using Flickr and Facebook to identify suspected rioters in Manchester and Salford.

The GMP reviewed footage from its CCTV feed and posted images to the force’s Flickr account Wednesday morning. The GMP has asked that anyone who recognizes those pictured contact the appeal line or anonymously report to Crimestoppers.
